Mozart Horn Concerti Pedagogical Duets

The pedagogical duets were developed to assist in the preparation of performances of the Mozart horn concertos. I used to sing the accompaniment in between solo sections to assist students with pacing and the idea of the piece as a whole. However, I am a better horn player than a vocalist or pianist, so playing the concerto as a duet was much more successful.

The duets, with the guidance of the instructor, do the following:

~Inspire more lyrical playing.
~Promote a clearer understanding of the accompaniment
~Improve awareness of intonation
~Offer new ideas for cadenzas
~Give students a new method for performing the concertos without a piano accompanist

Horn students often do not meet with an accompanist until a few weeks before a recital, yet students WILL meet with the teacher on a weekly basis.

This opportunity to get hornists engaged early on with the concerto as a whole, not just the solo line, is key to greater musical success. While not originally intended for concert performance, the duets should work very well for masterclasses and audition preparation. The C Duet Score and Part were created for high brass teachers and are especially great for trumpet players. The version in C is also handy to use on the piano as a single line accompaniment.

You should feel free to change octaves, articulations, and notes, and to simplify any part of the accompaniment. The goal is to give the overall impression of the orchestra.
